The Lucky 7 for KIDS campaign is proud to announce our new partnership with Colorado Rockies sportscaster, Jerry Schemmel.

Helping Hands for Freedom is LUCKY to have such a kind and caring voice to help us promote the needs of our military children of the fallen, wounded and deployed. Having authored two books and serving as a sought-after motivational speaker, Jerry’s inspiring life is a perfect fit to be one of the voices for military families in the community

Jerry received a Bachelor Degree in Journalism from Washburn University in Topeka, KS in 1982 and a Law Degree from the Washburn School of law in 1985. This year marks the sixth year for Jerry Schemmel as one of the radio voices of the Colorado Rockies on their flagship station KOA in Denver. Jerry is also one of the television voices of Mountain West Conference Basketball on Root Sports.

Jerry’s sportscasting career spans nearly 30 years and includes being the voice of the Denver Nuggets for 18 seasons and other extensive radio and television play by play of both professional and major college sports, including a stint as the Radio Voice of Colorado State Rams.

Jerry is a survivor of the crash of United Airlines Flight 232 in Sioux City, IA on July 19, 1989. On a flight from Denver to Chicago, an inflight engine explosion caused the crippled plane to crash land at Sioux Gateway Airport. 112 of the 296 onboard died in the tragedy. After escaping the plane, Jerry returned to the wreckage to rescue an 11-month-old baby. His book, Chosen to Live describes the experience.

Jerry has completed nine triathlons, three marathons and numerous ultra-distance cycling rides/races. He has done three transcontinental bike rides, from the west coast to the east coast, covering a total of 9,700 miles.
