April 22 was declared Kevin Winton day at Beech Grove Middle School. Each student lined the hallways at the end of the day, waiting to high five science teacher, Kevin Winton, before he leaves for a four-month trip across the United States – by foot.

Franklin Township residents and neighbors David Roth and Winton, beginning April 28, will walk from Atlantic City, N.J. to San Francisco, Calif.

They'll have to trek an average of 25 to 26 miles per day.

"I thought it was a joke," said Josh Copenhaver, middle school student. "The country is a big place."

Proceeds from the walk will benefit Helping Hands for Freedom and its efforts to raise $3.3 million to build and maintain a retreat house for veterans and military families.

"It's pretty incredible that someone would actually take the time to do that," said Joe Harlan, middle school student. "It makes him seem more powerful than he was. We didn't think anyone would be willing to do that. Actually seeing him try is pretty interesting."

For the past week, the school had fundraised to earn enough money to help Winton purchase the eight pairs of shoes he'll need on his journey. They presented Winton with a $1,246.82 check before he left.

"I can't imagine his feelings right now," said Principal, Thomas Gearhart. "I think it's awesome. It's certainly a worthy cause and he's certainly a role model for our kids in giving back."
