With a 144-mile "test walk" across Indiana behind him, and before next year's walk across America from Atlantic City to San Francisco, David Roth and Helping Hands for Freedom is asking residents of Shelby county and central Indiana to get involved.
On Sunday, Route for the Brave Shelbyville will take place. The 5-mile walk will start at the circle in downtown Shelbyville, head to Walmart along State Road 44, and end back at the circle. Registration for the walk begins at 1:30 p.m., and the walk will start at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for adults and free for those under the age of 12. To register, visit http://shelbyvillewalk.eventbrite.com.
In addition to the walk, there will be an auction, an opportunity to win Dallas Clark autographed items, a 50/50 opportunity, and an opportunity to meet Indiana native and former WBO World Heavyweight champion, Lamon Brewster.
Roth, chairman of the board for Helping hands for Freedom, and a 20-plus year Indianapolis Metro Police Department veteran, said the concept of Route for the Brave is a personal one for him.
"My stepson, Matt Coleman, is being deployed for the fifth time and the idea came about that way. Nothing breaks your heart more than trying to reintroduce children to their parent when they come back from being deployed. I am 40-something, in the grind of my life. There is a desire and a push to do one big adventure, and what better way than to do this," Roth said.
Helping Hands for Freedom CEO, Darin Fishburn, is asking for quite a crowd to turn out Sunday to get involved. "Come out for this walk and support military families. We are asking those coming out to spend the day with our heroes and show support for our fallen, wounded, and deployed military families," Fishburn said.
